One of my favorite rock records is Heavy Cream’s Super Treatment. Lead singer Jessica McFarland’s stage presence is so formidable and demonic and fun at the same time, and the record’s instrumentation and production capture that perfectly. The album sounds both like total nightmare dread and innocent Southern goofin’ around. Here’s their video for “Prison Shanks:”
You should probably listen to the album’s closer, “Evil Eye,” once a day. It’s the sound of the sentient force of doom that follows you everywhere, and to hear it is to face it and assuage your fear of it.
The album is available from Infinity Cat Recordings, as is their delightful first album, Danny.
McFarland is now in the band Cheap Time, so catch them on tour.
